The Central Florida Breaking Bad premise is intriguing on its own, but around the fourth episode, this darkly funny tale takes a welcome turn into Twin Peaks territory, with over-the-top characters, jaw-dropping surrealism, and the horror of how far desperate people will go — and how many more people they'll exploit — as they search for salvation at the top of a pyramid scheme. Hawkins is both a nod to the many plaintowns of American cinema and a place with its own eccentricities and charms. The kitschy special effects, the absurd predicaments, and the supernatural comedy are wonderful, but it's the cast and characters that make What We Do in the Shadows one of the best shows right now.
